Your Gums Will Do The Talking

While the health of your teeth influences your smile, the health of your gums directly impacts your internal health.

It's "leaky" gums that have been linked to heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, preterm labor, infertility (men and women) and so much more.

In fact, the inflamed, red, swollen, and bleeding gums is the pathway of destruction into your bloodstream.

GUM DISEASE IS 100% PREVENTABLE

Your gums should be pink, healthy, and strong.  They need to be able to support the roots of your teeth.  After all, what good are white teeth when they fall out because the gums were ignored?

If you think mouthwash is the answer.  Think again.  Mouthwash just accelerates the inflammation and destruction in the gum tissue..  need more information read WHY BRUSHING YOUR TEETH IS KILLING YOU... there is a simple solution to healthy gums.

An adult’s body has 37.2 trillion cells, 78 organs and close to 100,000 miles of blood vessels. All of these components work together to keep you alive. So, when we say your gums reveal your true health, we’re not kidding! If something is off in your body, and is not treated properly nor in time, the other parts of your body will begin to act out of the “norm.” Hence the reason why we say, “healthy gums, healthy you.”

There are many articles that go into depth about how the health of your gums often times show if there is something wrong with your overall health. One in particular does a fantastic job of going into detail and explaining all of the potential outcomes: “What the Color, Size, Shape, and Feel of Your Gums Say About Your Health” written by Zahra Barnes on Self.com. Many intriguing and eye-opening facts were explained, but this blog will focus on a few that were mentioned.

Bruxism – excessive grinding of the teeth and/or clenching of the jaw – can actually cause receding gums. This will ultimately make teeth look much longer than they naturally are and cause possible sensitivity if too much tooth becomes exposed. Often times mental health issues like anxiety and stress will cause one to grind their teeth, but we cannot forget, it is also commonly linked with sleep apnea. Pale gums? Not to cause fright, but it could be a sign that one has anemia. Anemia is when an individual’s blood vessels do not have enough healthy red blood cells or the red blood cells are dysfunctional. The reason why this causes pale gums is because healthy red blood cells contain hemoglobin which is what gives blood its red color; so, low or bad red blood cells, pale gums. Before getting worried, pale gums is not the one and only sign of anemia. In fact, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, and/or elevated heartbeat are other symptoms.

Dry mouth, also dry gums, could be a potential sign of an autoimmune disorder. When this happens, it is called Sjogren’s Syndrome – “an autoimmune disorder, meaning it happens when your immune system mistakenly attacks your body” Barnes says. This syndrome can be noticed in your mouth due to its effects on the mucous membrane which lowers the levels of tears and saliva; therefore, causing dry mouth. Interesting enough, gum disease and diabetes could go hand-in-hand. If one has uncontrolled diabetes, the body will have a much harder time breaking down the bacteria that is in the mouth. If there are more bacteria, it inevitably means there is more of a chance to gaining an infection. On top of all of that, because your mouth, gums and body are so severe, it will take much longer for everything to heal. Dr. Moskowitz says “having a bacterial infection in your mouth can tax the body and make it harder to control diabetes” per Barnes.
